2011
Junior A Camogie
November
St. Mary’s Junior team have had a busy time training since early September. Captained by Ballyhea’s Grainne Hanley the juniors have recently played Charleville boys (3 times!), and Ballyphenane in challenge games. Experienced players such as Elaine Crowley, Nicole O Connor, Katherina White and Denise Cagney should be to the forefront of the team while younger players like Roisin Twohill, Megan Kelleher and Emma O Connor should also make their mark. Charleville now go on to play away to St. Flannans in the Munster A semi final, while in the County A quarter final they will face Bandon at home. In the last three challenge matches the Juniors have beaten Cahir seniors and Mallow seniors and also lost to Mallow seniors. In the Cahir game scores came from Ciara Copse (2:2), Lorna Hooper (0:1), Megan Kelleher (0:1), Rebecca Noonan (0:1) while in the Mallow games Denise Cagney, Ciara Copse, Roisin Twohill, Natalie O Brien and Megan Kelleher all got on the scoresheet.
February
St. Mary’s junior team unfortunately was unsuccessful in their bid to regain the Munster A championship. Despite a brave bid in blustery conditions by the Charleville girls Colaiste Choilm Ballincollig deservedly took the honours on a scoreline of 2:10 to 0:4. The scoreline definitely doesn’t reflect the game as it was much closer and competitive than that.
St. Mary’s lost the toss and played with the wind in the opening half and opened the scoring with a well taken point from Roisin Twohill. Further scores came from the accurate Ciara Copse but Ballincollig struck back with two points from their chief player Niamh McCarthy. Charleville dominated the play but unfortunately scores were extremely hard to come by and as a result the half time score was 0:3 to 0:2 in St. Mary’s favour. Ballincollig had the wind in the second half and it was an uphill battle for the North Cork school. Despite some great defending the scores started to come for Ballincollig. St. Mary’s had one more point from Ciara Copse and were very unlucky not to get two goals which could have turned the game. Congratulations to Colaiste Choilm and we wish them every success in the All Ireland campaign. St. Mary’s recently also played the County A quarter final and had a convincing win over Bandon on a scoreline of 5:9 to 0:4. Scores came from Roisin Twohill (0:5), Natalie O Brien (2:0), Megan Kelleher (1:1), Ciara Copse (1:1), Denise Cagney (1:1), Elaine Crowley (0:1). St. Mary’s Juniors beat Drumcollogher in the county semi final after midterm but unfortunately lost the County final to Colaiste Choilm Ballincollig.

Junior B Camogie
St Mary’s Junior B have created history by becoming the first Junior B team from the school to reach their respective Munster final. This is a great achievement by this bunch of players as 21 girls have already played with the A team. The girls have beaten Ballyphenane 8:4 to 0:1, Crosshaven 7:1 to 3:1 and recently defeated St. Pats from Cork 4:2 to 1:10 in a cracking semi final. Captained by Caoimhe Farrell from Ballyagran, the girls now go on to play either Mount Mercy or Causeway in the Munster final after midterm. Unfortunately the girls were unsuccessful in the final against Mount Mercy. Our scores came from Geraldine O Connor, Jacinta Reidy, Niamh Savage and Sarah Leahy.

Senior Camogie
St. Mary’s seniors recently had a great win in the Senior League semi final over Borrisoleigh. The scoreline was 8:6 to 2:8. It was the senior’s best game of the year and there were impressive performances all over the pitch. Aine Bresnihan pulled off some outstanding saves in both halves. Nicola Browne made a welcome return and her hurling ability was a big addition to our backline. Our scores came from Grainne Hanley (0:1), Louise O Flynn (3:1), Kate Keane (2:2), Roisin Twohill (1:0), Katie Galvin (2:0), Aoife Twohill (0:2). The seniors play Ballincollig in the County semi final and now go on to play Nenagh in the Munster A league final in a repeat of the championship game earlier in the year when the Tipp school came out on top. St Mary’s are determined to reverse this result!

Munster A 7s
On a beautiful day for camogie, St Marys Charleville reached the Munster A 7s final and were very unlucky to lose to St. Flannans of Ennis who were inspired by a brilliant display from their goalkeeer. The round robin series of games were highly competitive and St. Marys finished their group on top by virtue of good wins over St. Caimins Shannon, Lismore and Borrisoleigh. In the semi final we got the better of Christ King but unfortunately luck was not on our side in the final against Flannans. Catpain Katie Galvin played her heart out at centre back all day and got great support in defence from Katherina White and our most improved player of the year Aine Bresnihan. Nicole O Connor was the best midfielder on view and the athletic Denise Cagney and Grainne Hanley also did well. Megan Kelleher and Ciara Copse contributed very well when introduced while in the forwards Elaine Crowley and Rosin Twohill were flying. Maybe next year we can regain this coveted Munster title once more as 6 of the panel are underage again.
Panel: Aine Bresnihan (Ballyagran), Katherina White (Ballyagran), Nicole O Connor (Milford), Katie Galvin (Captain) (Milford), Denise Cagney (Newtownshandrum), Roisin Twohill (Newtownshandrum), Grainne Hanley (Ballyhea), Elaine Crowley (Ballyhea), Ciara Copse (Newtownshandrum), Megan Kelleher (Ballyhea).
First Year Camogie
St. Mary’s first year panel played in the Cork A blitz last October. Captained on the day by Charleville’s Meadhbh Buckley St. Marys won 3 of our their 4 group games in comprehensive fashion to qualify for the final but injuries took their toll by this stage and were unfortunate to lose the final by 2 points.
The first game was against the hosts Colaiste Choilm Ballincollig, final score was 4:0 to 0:0 in our favour. Kinsale were the opposition in the second game. Final score here was 2:1 to 1:1 in a keenly contested game. All our scores came from the hurley of Rebecca Noonan who was starting to really shine in midfield and there were further good displays by her Granagh Ballingarry clubmates Rosarie Heffernan, Aine Sheehy and Niamh Vaughan.
In the third game we faced Drumcollogher. This was an opportunity to give the subs some game time. However we lost this game 3:3 to 0:1. Unfortunately 2 of our star players Rebecca Noonan and Niamh Killeen had to retire injured early in this game and their loss was to prove a major problem later in the day. In the final round robin game we faced Christ King and knowing that only a win would be good enough to reach the final. This proved to be our best display of the day, final score was 2:0 to 0:0.
The final proved to be an excellent encounter with Drum. Final score was 1:4 to 1:2. Congratulations to them and their coach Julie Hickey a past student of St. Mary’s! St. Mary’s first years still have the Cork County A championship and Munster A blitz to look forward to later in the year. Finally well done to all the panel who participated in the indoor blitz earlier in the year.
